UKHab Habitat Classification

The UK Habitat Classification System (UKHab) is a hierarchical approach to classifying terrestrial habitats which may be found across the UK. It is most frequently used to support baseline assessments of habitats, including baseline Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments.

Our Director is familiar with all major UK terrestrial habitat types, including cryptic habitats which require specialist knowledge to adequately distinguish, and is one of fewer than 40 people across Britain to have received a FISC Level 6. This indicates a person with ‘excellent identification skills likely to be commissioned nationally for surveying’.

National Vegetation Classification Survey

The National Vegetation Classification (NVC) is the most detailed habitat classification available in Britain and serves to characterise communities of plants and some fungi into a broad spectrum of discrete habitat types. In addition to its ability to classify habitats, the NVC provides important information on environmental context for habitats, including information on soils, community composition, distribution of habitats, rare species associates and more.

The NVC is particularly useful in the identification of important habitats which are materially important to development schemes. These include:
  • Priority habitats: Habitats of Principal Importance for the conservation of biodiversity nationally.
  • Annex I habitats: Habitats of international importance recognised under Annex I Habitats Directive (Council Directive 92/43/EEC) 1992.
  • Ground Water Dependent Terrestrial Ecosystems (GWDTEs): Habitats which are critically dependent upon groundwater flows and particularly sensitive to ground disturbances and water abstraction.
  • Irreplaceable habitats: Including blanket bog, coastal sand dune, saltmarsh and lowland fen.

Biodiversity Net Gain

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an approach to development and land use change which, simply, aims to leave the natural environment in a measurably improved condition than before development and/or other land use change.
Our Director is fully trained and experienced in the use of the Statutory Metric and all previous versions, and is able to assist in BNG requirements. This particularly includes:
  • Baseline BNG survey and assessment
  • Calculation of Biodiversity Units (BUs)
  • Preparation of habitat creation and management plans

Field Identification Skills Certificate (FISC)

The Field Identification Skills Certificate (FISC) acts as a means of quantifying, on a scale of 1 to 6, how skilled a person is at identifying British higher plants. Individuals with FISC Level 1 have basic ID skills and may be familiar with daisy, buttercups and plantain, though would be unable to identify most species, including any grasses, sedges or ferns. Those with FISC 6 by contrast, have excellent ID skills and would be likely to be commissioned nationally to survey a particular group.

FISC is quickly becoming the industry standard and is required for a great deal of habitat-related work, including all habitat survey work submitted as part of forestry applications in England.

Styles Ecology Ltd, in cooperation with the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland (BSBI), is happy to offer FISC assessments to both private companies and individuals alike. For queries related to FISC, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
