UKHab Habitat Survey

Excellence in Ecology

The UK Habitat Classification System (UKHab) is a recent and hierarchical approach to classifying terrestrial habitats across the UK. It is widely used to support baseline assessments of habitats, including baseline Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments.

Our Clients

What

What is UKHab Habitat Survey

Our Director is well-versed in all major UK terrestrial habitat types, including cryptic habitats that require specialist knowledge for accurate identification. With a FISC Level 6 certification, a distinction held by fewer than 40 individuals in Britain, our Director possesses 'excellent identification skills likely to be commissioned nationally for surveying.' This expertise ensures that UKHab surveys conducted by our team are accurate and reliable.

Benefits of UKHab and Additional Services

The optimal period for UKHab field surveys is typically between May and September. However, thanks to our Director's extensive experience in vegetative plant identification, we can offer UKHab surveys outside of this period as well. While we can provide Phase 1 habitat surveys, this rapid assessment method has largely been replaced by UKHab, which offers several advantages:
  • Greater accuracy in habitat identification, reducing the potential for disagreements
  • Enhanced compatibility with Biodiversity Net Gain initiatives
  • Better translation to priority and other high-value habitats
For projects requiring more detailed habitat information or where priority, Annex I, or irreplaceable habitats might be present, a National Vegetation Classification survey may be more appropriate.

UKHab Hierarchy

The UK Habitat Classification System (UKHab) provides a structured and detailed approach to categorising habitats across the UK. This system is organised into a hierarchical framework that allows for precise identification and classification of habitats, making it an invaluable tool for ecological assessments, including those related to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG). The hierarchy is divided into five levels, each offering increasing specificity and detail, from broad biomes to specific habitats with significant conservation importance.

Level 1 – Biome

At the highest level, habitats are classified based on their biome, which encompasses the broadest categories such as terrestrial, marine, or freshwater environments. This level provides a foundational distinction between the major types of habitats found across the UK.

Level 2 – Ecosystem Type

Within each biome, the next level of classification identifies the ecosystem type, such as grassland, woodland, or wetland. This categorisation reflects the general nature of the habitat and its ecological characteristics.

Level 3 – Broad Habitat

Moving deeper into the hierarchy, broad habitats are identified, such as neutral grassland or coniferous woodland. These categories represent more specific habitat types within each ecosystem, offering a clearer understanding of the habitat’s general composition.
